A Different Kind of Day at the Park

What happens when a herd of goats joins a community forestry festival?

On September 26, 2026, Goats in the City joined the City of Mississauga at Erindale Park for its second annual Forestry Fall Festival, part of National Forest Week.

The free, family-friendly celebration brought together residents for tree planting, forestry education, wagon rides, wildlife exhibits and outdoor activities. Along the park trail, the Eco-Herd offered another way to explore the relationship between nature and caring for urban green spaces.

The Goats Got People Talking

The goats attracted the attention of visitors along the trail. Families stopped at the fence, children watched the herd browse, and residents gathered to ask questions and learn about prescribed grazing.

That is what makes a live demonstration special. Instead of simply reading about ecological land care, visitors could see it taking place right in front of them.

A Little Curiosity Goes a Long Way

Why goats? What do they eat? How does grazing help manage unwanted vegetation?

A working herd can open the door to bigger conversations about invasive plants, biodiversity and practical alternatives to conventional vegetation management. With the Eco-Shepherd on site, the demonstration gave visitors an approachable introduction to this work.

Part of a Greener Mississauga

Mississauga has embraced prescribed grazing as part of its approach to managing invasive plants in sensitive natural areas. The City has also publicly recognized the program's community impact, saying it has generated public interest and sparked conversations about local ecosystems.

The Forestry Fall Festival brought that connection into a lively community setting, alongside the City's broader commitment to urban forestry education.

Sometimes a conversation about caring for the environment begins with something as simple as watching a goat reach for a leaf.

Thank you to the City of Mississauga's Forestry team for inviting Goats in the City to be part of a day dedicated to learning, community and a greener future.

No Mowers. No Herbicides. Just Goats.
